Career Counseling & Planning

Underwood University provides advisors to help students with academic and career counseling. Advisors can help students identify and understand career paths open to their general education and degree paths, and equip them with the tools to help them manage career development effectively. All Underwood University undergraduate students have the opportunity to take PT203 Career Development. This course helps students to understand career planning and decision-making. It develops an understanding of HR/employment practices as students develop practical skills to facilitate their individual success including writing effective resumes, preparing job search correspondence, improving interview skills, networking and job prospecting, and using internet resources to land internships and jobs. It examines methods of researching information on careers and applies decision-making models.

Graduate students in Underwood’s theological programs may choose from several leadership courses for those interested in working in church and ministry settings. These courses cover a range of ministry leadership topics from interpersonal relationships to time management to diversity issues, all aimed at increasing the student’s leadership skills and preparing them for a career in ministry. Master of intercultural studies and Master of divinity is students also enroll in ministry practicum classes, for which they are paired with a mentor in a local church and placed “on the ground” in an actual ministry setting, as part of their preparation for professional ministry.

Career Development Workshops

Underwood University also partners with local churches, charities, and nonprofits to provide a number of volunteer and service opportunities for our students. Whether you are looking to practice real ministry as part of your degree program or just looking to help out, we can find you a place where you can serve and help the community. Please contact the Office of Student Affairs if you are interested in volunteering or outreach.

Interview Skills Workshops

Underwood provides periodic Interview Skills Workshops in which students are coached in interview skills that equip them to effectively research prospective employers, analyze job requirements and obtain useful job search information. These workshops are designed to prepare students to articulate their skills and talents to potential employers. The workshops provide interview tips, practice answers for common interview questions, and techniques for correct interview behavior. Students are provided with an interview “toolkit” that includes tips on dressing for success, making good first impressions, and what to ask interviewers.
